A 31-year-old man, Brempong Daniel, has been shot dead by an unknown assailant at Nkonya Kodzi in the Biakoye District of the Oti region.
The Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sarpong Appiah, told GBCNEWS that the deceased was shot dead at a restricted area in that part of the district at about 0700 hours on Monday, August 1, 2022.
According to him, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Margaret Marquart Hospital for autopsy.
Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sarpong Appiah said the military, with support from other security agencies, had intensified patrols and were doing their best to bring things under control.
According to him, there is no established correlation between the murder and the conflict between Alavanyo and Nkonya.
This notwithstanding, suspicion is high and locals are cautioned against entering the restricted area.
Yesterday’s killing comes after a period of relative calm as stakeholders worked to resolve long-standing land disputes between the people of Nkonya and Alavanyo, which have claimed several lives over the years.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says it has opened an investigation into the incident.
A statement issued by the police and signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Police in the Oti Region, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) John Nchor, said the police have intensified patrols in Nkonya and other areas to ensure law and order.
